Holiday Bunco: Themed Nights for Every Season

One of the best things about a monthly Bunco group is that you have twelve chances a year to celebrate. And when you pair your game night with a seasonal or holiday theme, every gathering feels like a mini party. You do not need to go overboard. A few themed touches in your decor, food, and prizes make the night feel special without adding a ton of extra work. Here is your month-by-month guide to holiday Bunco nights your whole group will love.

February: Galentine's Day

Forget February 14th. Galentine's Day (February 13th, or whichever night works for your group) is all about celebrating the women in your life, which is basically what Bunco does every month anyway. Go all in on pink and red: heart-shaped everything, rose petals on the tables, and plenty of chocolate. Serve heart-shaped cookies, strawberry desserts, and pink drinks (rose, cranberry spritzers, or strawberry lemonade). Give everyone a small Galentine's card or a chocolate truffle box, and let the prizes lean romantic: candles, bath bombs, cozy socks, or a bottle of wine with a cute label. Print scorecards with heart borders and call it the "Love and Dice" edition.

March: Lucky Dice (St. Patrick's Day)

Everything green and gold for this one. Scatter shamrock confetti on the tables, hang some green streamers, and encourage everyone to wear green (pinch penalty for anyone who forgets). Irish-inspired food works beautifully: mini shepherd's pies, Irish soda bread with butter, colcannon bites, or keep it simple with a Reuben dip and green-frosted sugar cookies. Drinks are easy: Irish coffee, green beer, or a mint-themed cocktail. Use shamrock scorecards, and let the prizes lean lucky: scratch-off lottery tickets, gold coin candy, or a little pot of gold (a cute mug filled with treats). Call it "Lucky Dice Night" and lean into every cheesy pun you can think of.

April: Spring Fling / Easter

Brighten things up after winter with a pastel-themed spring night. Fresh flowers on every table, bunny napkins, and Easter eggs scattered around the room set the scene without much effort. Serve springy foods like deviled eggs, fruit kabobs, lemon bars, and carrot cake bites. For drinks, try a lavender lemonade or a mimosa bar. Prizes could include a spring candle, a small potted plant, or a basket of Easter candy. Scorecards with floral borders or little chicks keep the theme going. If your group loves games within games, hide a few plastic eggs around the house with bonus prizes inside.

June: Summer BBQ Bunco

Take the party outside if you can. Patio Bunco with string lights, citronella candles, and a backyard barbecue vibe is the ultimate summer night. Grill up sliders, hot dogs, or chicken skewers, and set out classic sides like coleslaw, corn on the cob, watermelon slices, and pasta salad. Drinks should be cold and refreshing: lemonade, iced tea, a summer shandy, or a big batch of sangria. Use red-and-white checkered tablecloths and give out fun summer prizes like sunglasses, beach towels, insulated tumblers, or sunscreen gift sets. Scorecards with a gingham or sun design nail the vibe.

August/September: Back to School

This one is especially fun if your group includes school parents. Celebrate the kids going back with an "adult recess" theme. Decorate with apples, chalkboard signs, and school supplies. Serve lunchbox nostalgia food: PB&J pinwheels, fruit snacks, juice boxes (spiked or not), pizza rolls, and those little iced animal cookies. Prizes could include a cute notebook, a fancy pen set, or a teacher-style apple mug. Use scorecards designed like notebook paper or a chalkboard. Encourage everyone to wear their old school colors or a college t-shirt.

October: Spooky Dice (Halloween)

Halloween Bunco is a group favorite, and for good reason. Costumes encouraged (or at least festive accessories like cat ears, witch hats, or spooky jewelry). Decorate with fake cobwebs, mini pumpkins, battery-powered candles, and spooky music in the background. The food practically plans itself: mummy hot dogs, "witch finger" pretzel rods, Halloween candy, spider deviled eggs, and a cauldron of punch. For drinks, try a black sangria, apple cider (spiked or not), or a "witch's brew" cocktail with dry ice for drama. Award a prize for best costume in addition to the usual game prizes. Scorecards with bats, ghosts, or jack-o-lanterns add the finishing touch. Hand out Halloween candy bags or spooky candles as prizes.

November: Thankful Dice (Thanksgiving)

November Bunco usually falls before the big Thanksgiving rush, making it the perfect time for a low-key gathering with a grateful theme. Decorate with fall leaves, mini pumpkins, and warm-toned candles. Set out a gratitude jar where everyone writes something they are thankful for on a slip of paper (read them aloud between rounds for some sweet moments). Serve fall comfort food: a soup bar with bread bowls, pumpkin dip, caramel apple slices, and pecan pie bites. Drinks could include a spiced apple cider, a pumpkin spice martini, or mulled wine. Scorecards with autumn leaves or turkey designs work perfectly, and prizes like a fall candle, a cozy throw blanket, or a baking mix set are always a hit.

December: Holiday Party

December Bunco is the grand finale of the year, so go big. This is the night for your ugliest sweater, your sparkliest outfit, or your most festive pajamas, whatever your group decides. Decorate with twinkle lights, garland, ornaments, and holiday music. The food spread should feel special: a charcuterie board, mini quiches, holiday cookies, gingerbread, peppermint bark, and a hot cocoa bar with all the toppings. Serve eggnog, mulled wine, cranberry cocktails, or champagne. Many groups do a white elephant gift exchange in addition to the regular prizes, which adds a hilarious extra layer to the night. Scorecards with snowflake or ornament designs round out the theme. Prizes could include holiday ornaments, fancy hot cocoa mix, or a gift card to a favorite shop.

Making Seasonal Themes Easy

You do not need to spend a fortune or stress about Pinterest-level perfection. Here are a few shortcuts that work every time:

  • Dollar store decor. Seasonal napkins, tablecloths, and small decorations are inexpensive and do the job perfectly.
  • Themed playlist. A quick Spotify search for holiday or seasonal playlists sets the mood with zero effort.
  • Scorecard templates. Use Canva to quickly customize a scorecard with seasonal graphics. Save them and reuse year after year.
  • Potluck it. Assign each player a themed dish or drink to bring. It splits the workload and gives everyone a chance to contribute.
  • Keep prizes seasonal. Match your prizes to the holiday and they automatically feel more thoughtful, even if they cost five dollars.

Seasonal Bunco themes turn your monthly game into something your group genuinely looks forward to all year. Pick the holidays that matter most to your crew, add a few fun touches, and watch the excitement build. After all, the dice are going to roll no matter what. You might as well have a little extra fun while they do.
